Why two-tone still leads kitchen refreshes
Painting the lowers a darker color and keeping the uppers light is the single most requested kitchen job we do. It grounds the kitchen visually, hides scuffs on the base cabinets where kids and dogs actually make contact, and makes a builder-grade kitchen feel custom for a fraction of a full remodel.
The island is usually where homeowners get bolder — deep navy, forest green, or a warm charcoal against light perimeter cabinets is the combo that photographs and lives best.
Color pairings that work long-term
Warm white uppers + soft black or charcoal lowers (Dunn Edwards Whisper + Black Bean) — the safest resale-friendly combo.
Creamy off-white uppers + sage or muted green lowers (DE Swiss Coffee + Muir Woods) — softer, works in transitional and modern-farmhouse kitchens.
Light greige uppers + navy island (DE Baked Biscotti + Anchors Aweigh) — reads current without chasing a trend that dates fast.
Combos we quietly steer clients away from
High-contrast uppers/lowers in strong cool tones (bright white uppers + pure gray lowers) tend to feel dated inside 3-4 years. Same with anything in the 'greige' family paired with cool grays — cool gray is the beige of the 2010s and it's showing its age fast.
Very saturated colors (deep teal, burgundy) on both uppers and lowers can work, but they narrow your buyer pool if you sell inside 5 years. We usually recommend saving those colors for the island only.
How the job actually goes
A proper two-tone cabinet repaint is a 5-7 day project: doors and drawer fronts come off and get sprayed in our shop; boxes get cleaned, deglossed, and rolled/sprayed on site with a bonding primer and two coats of a cabinet-grade enamel. We use Dunn Edwards Aristoshield exclusively for cabinet work — it levels beautifully and cures hard enough to survive years of daily use.
