Sherwin Williams Duration vs Emerald: Which Wins in Arizona?

A working contractor's side-by-side on Duration and Emerald — where each one earns its price in the desert sun.
The short version
Emerald is Sherwin Williams' top-tier exterior line. Duration sits one rung below. Both are excellent — but in Arizona UV, the gap between them is real, and Emerald is the stronger spec of the two. Coverage and hide
Emerald has noticeably better hide, especially on color changes. On a light-to-dark or dark-to-light repaint, Emerald will usually cover in two coats where Duration might need a primer plus two.
That coverage difference eats into the price gap — Emerald's higher per-gallon cost gets partially offset by fewer coats and less primer.
Fade and UV resistance
Both products carry strong warranties, but Emerald's resin system holds color longer on south- and west-facing walls that take the worst of the Arizona sun. On a Duration exterior at the 7-8 year mark you'll usually see some fade on the hot elevations. Emerald typically holds through year 10.
When Duration still makes sense
Duration is a defensible pick when the budget is tight and the walls face north or are heavily shaded — the UV load is much lower, so Emerald's advantage narrows. It's also solid for garages and outbuildings.
If a contractor's quote says Duration, that's not a red flag by itself — but on sun-blasted elevations in the Phoenix metro, insist on the top tier: Emerald if you're staying with Sherwin Williams, or Evershield if your painter runs Dunn Edwards like we do.
